EMDR 2.0: Advanced Trauma Processing

Advanced, evidence-based treatment that accelerates trauma processing for faster, more effective healing.

Watch this brief video to understand how EMDR 2.0 works to heal trauma.

What is EMDR Therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy approach developed in the late 1980s that helps people heal from trauma and distressing life experiences. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR works directly with how traumatic memories are stored and processed in the brain.

EMDR is endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO), the American Psychiatric Association, and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs as a first-line treatment for trauma and PTSD. Extensive research demonstrates its effectiveness in reducing symptoms and improving quality of life.

Key Point: EMDR doesn't require you to talk in detail about your trauma or complete homework assignments. The therapy works by helping your brain reprocess traumatic memories naturally, intuitively, the way it processes other experiences during sleep, digesting and metabolizing the experience for the body to take away what is helpful, and discard what is not.

The Standard EMDR Protocol: 8 Phases

Traditional EMDR therapy follows a structured 8-phase approach:

1

History & Planning

We review your history and identify target memories for processing, creating a comprehensive treatment plan.

2

Preparation

I teach you stress-management and grounding techniques to ensure you feel safe throughout the process.

3

Assessment

We identify the specific components of the target memory: image, negative belief, emotions, and body sensations.

4

Desensitization

Using bilateral stimulation (eye movements, taps, or sounds), we process the memory until it no longer causes distress.

5

Installation

We strengthen positive beliefs about yourself to replace the negative beliefs associated with the trauma.

6

Body Scan

We check for any remaining physical tension or discomfort related to the memory and process it fully.

7

Closure

Each session ends with techniques to help you return to a state of equilibrium, feeling safe and grounded.

8

Reevaluation

We review progress, assess any remaining distress, and identify additional targets if needed.

What Makes EMDR 2.0 Different?

EMDR 2.0 is an advanced protocol developed by Dutch psychologists Dr. Ad de Jongh and Dr. Suzy Matthijssen that amplifies the standard EMDR process for faster, more efficient trauma resolution.

The Science Behind EMDR 2.0

EMDR 2.0 builds on the foundation of standard EMDR but deliberately increases emotional, cognitive and somatic activation prior to memory processing. Research shows that this enhanced activation leads to faster desensitization and often requires fewer processing sets to achieve full resolution.

The protocol is based on Working Memory Theory—the understanding that our working memory (short-term processing capacity) is limited. When we overload working memory during trauma processing, the vividness and emotional intensity of traumatic memories decrease more rapidly.

🎯

Supercharged Activation

Deliberately zooms into the worst part of the target memory, intensifying the experience to maximize efficiency.

Enhanced Bilateral

Faster, more intense eye movements create greater working memory taxation.

🧮

Dual Tasks

Clients perform additional tasks (counting, spelling, dance step, tapping sequences, etc) while tracking with eye movements while holding the Targeted memory/experience to overload working memory.

📉

Rapid Relief

Often results in significant symptom reduction in fewer sets, with some targets resolving in a single session.

Important: These techniques sound challenging, but they are carefully calibrated to your tolerance level. You remain in control throughout the process.
